Self-Publishing Your Own Book is the New Business Card Altucher

If you’ve just given someone your business card then you failed. If you have a business card you might be about to fail. Nobody cares what’s on it. I throw out all business cards.

I’ve written before about self-publishing but more than the “why” and “how” (although I add more info about this below than I previously have) this post is why YOU NEED to self-publish if you are in business, a blogger, a writer, or in any profession (essentially all professions) where you want to stand out versus the competition. There is one window, right now, where you have the right combination of “easy to do”, “cheap”, and “nobody is doing it”. The key is the Era of Validation is over. Nobody needs to pick you. You pick yourself.

I’ve published eight books in the past seven years, five with traditional publishers (Wiley, Penguin, HarperCollins), one comic book, and the last two I’ve self-published. In this post I give the specific details of all of my sales numbers and advances with the traditional publishers. books, “How to be the Luckiest Man Alive” and “I Was Blind But Now I See” I can tell you these two have already sold more than my five books with traditional publishers, combined.

If you, the entrepreneur, self-publish a book you will stand out, you will make more money, you will kick your competitors right in the XX, and you will look amazingly cool at cocktail parties. I know this because I am seldom cool but at cocktail parties, with my very own comic book, I can basically have sex with anyone in the room. But don’t believe me- it costs you nothing and almost no time to try it yourself.

The rest of this article is really three discussions: Why self-publish rather than use a traditional publisher, why entrepreneurs and others who seek to stand out for career or creatuve purposes should self-publish, and finally, HOW does one go about self-publishing.

WHY:

A) Advances are going to zero. Book publishers are getting more and more squeezed by declining booksellers so they, in turn, have to squeeze the writers. Because of so much free content on the Internet, the value per unit of content is going to zero unless you are already an established name-brand author.

Publishing a book

Self-publishing is fastest, but it takes the most work. Otherwise, you submit a query to known publishing companies, and hope someone loves what you've got. The latter is a crapshoot; the former is a sure thing for publication, but not for sales.
Check out Dan Poynter's _The Self Publishing Manual_ for starters. Tom and Marilyn Ross' Self Publishing book is very good, too.
You can also publish ebooks online, for very little cost. To learn more about that, look at to buy anything that Angela Hoy has written about the subject.
Hope this helps,

Your best choice is

To write the best book you can. Revise and edit. Repeat. Get some feedback and edit again. Polish that book until you can see your reflection in the ink! (to mix a metaphor)
When the book is the best you can make it, then start researching agents. Go to the bookstore and find books similar to your own. Check the acknowledgment pages to see if the authors mention their agents. Take notes on who reps what kind of book. Google agents' names, book titles, and authors. You can can then refine your search with these sites:

Publish America

The worst thing about signing a contract with Publish America is that it's for seven years, which, I believe, is far too excessive for any writing contract.
In addition to that, you do your own publicity, arrange your own book signings, etc.
Publish America claims they send out a press package to all the addresses an author supplies, but I've seen that press package--it's a single piece of paper, it doesn't specify anything at all about the author, and looks like something most people toss out with the other junk mail.
The good thing is that they do print quality books, the books can be ordered online at B&N, Amazon, and the publisher's site, and it doesn't cost the author

Set Up Your Own 'Walking The World' Members Site

Hi Hitch,
You've got a great deal of content there and, to be perfectly honest with you, you're sitting on a goldmine.
All your data is in digital format, I presume. Get someone to set up a site where hitchers, like yourself, can login, post their own collections of images, stories, tips, etc.
In the UK, 'kings of the road' would leave secret signs or markers to let each other know where the best places were to eat for free, get clean, sleep, and also where to avoid and why.
Set up a section called something like 'Global Hitcher Secrets', where members leave top tips for each other, the same way markers used to be
