Great Expectations: Could E-book readers be the start of a new chapter?

UPDATED: 03:59 EST, 21 July 2009

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times: the decade when we loved the web... but preferred a portable read to a PC. Could E-book readers - capable of downloading anything from Dickens to your daily newspaper - be the start of a new chapter?

There will come a day when we need not carry newspapers or books with us in their current format – we will be able to get their content on novel-sized sheets of electronic paper, downloaded in seconds to read on or offline..

Getting E-books can be complicated. Unlike converting CDs into MP3s, your PC doesn't have a slot for paperbacks - so you have to to find them online

When that happens two media giants, the web and the printed word, will become one. Sadly, that day isn’t quite here yet.

In America, Amazon’s Kindle downloads E-books and news wirelessly via 3G; in Japan, there is a colour E-book.

The readers here – which can all hold hundreds of books – have flicker-free pages that simulate a printed page, but most are black and white, and none have wireless.

E-book readers... which one is for you?

SONY PRS-505

£200, sony.co.uk
This 6in reader is stylish but not perfect. You can download copyright-free (ie, old) books in ePub format, but for newer titles you have to use Sony’s format, BBeB, and pay £5 to £6 at Sony’s site, run by Waterstone’s.

Sony E-bookILIAD LIBTESCO 2

£600, iliadreader.co.uk
With a huge 10.2in screen and matching price tag, the Libresco 2 is aimed at business users wanting to read A4 PDF and other files in near 1:1 ratio. You can also make notes on the touchscreen. The Iliad supports Mobipocket, PDF and text files.

BEBOOK

£230, mybebook.com
Controls are unresponsive, and there’s no touchscreen – but it comes with 150 books pre-installed. Uses the Mobipocket format, as well as PDF and Word files. An updated BeBook 2 will add touchscreen, Wi-Fi and 3G – but it doesn’t have a release date yet.

Advice:lower your expectations in job search

Just because you have your bachelors degree doesn't mean you are gonna walk in and step into some great job. So first of all, you need to go to your library and ask the reference desk where the books are on job search. There are a TON of new books out there that help you "find a job in a difficult market" (I cannot remember the exact title of that one but I loaned it to a friend a yr ago) and it gives you STEPS you can take to broaden your job search;
for example, since I know you are frustrated and impatient and wanting a quick answer to solve all your problems:
the book suggests that you spend only a certain percent finding and applying for jobs online(because you are competing with hundreds of people JUST LIKE YOU)

Well since you're at the initial planning stages

Perhaps you can just spend some time online and do some research - your question is way too vague to get any useful info right now.
Search this forum - tons of great posts here already
try tripadvisor.com - for info and forums
google your destinations and do some research
Your questions on when the best time to go, budget, packing, destinations are vague - it all depends on what kind of traveler you are, your budget, what your expectations are, your interests, etc. Think about what you want to do, see, experience and then start looking online

  • Avatar Jack Is there any website where I can practice for the COMPASS Reading Test?
Jan 22, 2012 by Jack | Posted in Standards & Testing

I need some websites where I can practice the Reading COMPASS Exit Exam, which I am taking in April. If you could help me, I would greatly appreciate it.

    • The "Official" Compass practice exam that is online is pretty poor ( Your best bet would be to purchase (new or used) a THEA study guide. They basically cover the same material and the THEA study guild gives you many more practice problems.
