In honor of All Hallows Read, your guide to scary stories online

A few years ago, author Neil Gaiman decided the world was lacking in holidays that involve giving books. He proposed a wonderful solution: use Halloween as an excuse to give scary books to family and friends. The resulting tradition is called All Hallows Read. It's been going strong ever since.

There's no true equivalent of All Hallows Read online…but there's also no shortage of scary stories. The last few weeks have brought us a surplus of terrific Halloween reads on everything from ghost hunters to horror movie locales. In the spirit of All Hallows Read, I've rounded up some of the best. Don't forget to share them with your friends.

Ghost Stories, from Narratively. A collection of five stories of "ghoulish pastimes" and spooky local lore, rolled out over the course of the week. By Friday you'll be able to access them all.

What Vampire Graves Tell Us About Ancient Superstitions, from The Atlantic. What do disease, brutal burial practices, and vampire legend have in common? This fascinating archeological exploration tells all.

Ghost Stories: The Science Behind Sightings, from Discovery News. There's no tangible evidence that ghosts exist (yet). So what's behind all of those supernatural sightings?

10 Real-Life Horror Movie Sets That Are Too Creepy Not to Visit, from The Huffington Post. Find out where films like The Shining and The Silence of the Lambs took place and, if you're really into the macabre, add them to the itinerary for your next vacation.

Real-Life Florida Horror Stories to Scare You This Halloween, from the Miami New Times. These stories are so disturbing it's hard to believe they weren't dreamt up by Stephen King.

Horror movies based on true stories, from Canoe.ca. The Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, The Conjuring…all came to be because of events that many claim to be true.

Abandoned Places Tumblr. There isn't much reading to be done on this site, but the images are too creepy not to include. Peruse pictures from an abandoned (and haunted?) Columbia hotel and a terrifying old amusement park straight out of Hanna.
