Keep Students Reading and Learning This Summer!

Summer Reading Challenge

“Research shows that children who do not read in the summer can lose two to three months of reading development while those who do read tend to gain a month of reading proficiency.”

–Richard Allington and Anne McGill-Franzen. The Impact of Summer Setback on the Reading Achievement Gap. The Phi Delta Kappan. Volume 85, o. 1 (Sept. 2003), pp. 68-75.

As summertime approaches, kids look forward to their time off. But there’s one thing kids shouldn’t take a break from over the summer – reading. Try the formula that’s good for schools, fun for the whole community, and exciting for kids:

Summer is the best time to offer kids a chance to read books that really interest them. Use a Scholastic Summer Reading Book Fair to kick off a successful summer reading program. It provides:

Access and choice to a wide range of books, including a Hot Summer Reads Table featuring popular titles* like:

Tools and resources including signage and access to a complete set of reproducibles developed to make running your summer reading program easy

Developed specifically to encourage summer reading success, this no-cost online program features great tools for educators, resources for parents, and a motivating reason for kids to read.

Like any skill, the more kids practice reading, the better they become. Nothing gets kids excited about books and reading over the summer like Read for the World Record. Kids join their school team, read books, and log reading minutes online in a global effort to set a world record for summer reading.

Online summer reading programs?
Based on number of minutes read. Prizes are digital only, usually badges, occasionally a chapter of a book.
Books must be chosen from their list and points are awarded based on test scores. Actual prizes are mailed with parent permission or you can choose to provide prizes at home.
I hope she has a great time at her camps! They sound terrific.

Use the time productively

Watching too much TV will make you feel like your life is going nowhere. I would use the time to focus on things you have always wanted to do but haven't had time for - house projects, etc. You can also use the time to focus on gaining new job skills to add to your resume. This summer I took all of the Microsoft Office online training courses for programs like Access and Publisher, which I didn't know well before. Then I added them to my resume.
You can also do some productive reading and even try to learn a new language. You can volunteer your time for a cause you feel strongly about

  • Avatar Shiddy Smell Where can I read Star Wars Literature (books, comics, etc.) online?
Nov 10, 2008 by Shiddy Smell | Posted in Books & Authors

I am a huge fan of Star Wars literature, especially the stuff published in the pre-Prequel era, before the new movies were released.

I am looking for any sites that provide entire texts of any of the Star Wa …r Wars: Legacy and related comics, or any of "The Essential Guide to..." series of reference books. Do any of the sites exist? Best answer goes to the best link posted, or if none exist, then the best explanation of why.

    • They are all recently published, so they are still under copyright. Unless one of the authors has intentionally put the book online, you are most likely out of luck.

Pirate sites, that scan copyrighted works and make them available with no payment to the author, are inconsiderate to the author, and they're illegal. You would not want that to happen to your novel.
